Focus on Local Business: Cute as a Button Designs

Cute as a Button Earring Pack

Cute as a Button Designs all began when Alicia Dobson turned a hobby into a successful online business. Alicia’s fabric button earrings are handmade in Moss Vale, Southern Highlands NSW and are worn by many Highlands locals and posted all around Australia. We talked about how to manage a growing business and growing family.

How did you start your online business?

It first started three years ago as a hobby. I launched my business on social media, taking orders through Facebook .

What does a day in the office look like for you?

I try and keep to a schedule beginning the day with coffee and breakfast and school drop off. I then drop the kids at school and head back home to work before school pick up. After I pick the kids up we head to the post office to send customer orders, it’s then dinner and bed! Wake up and do it all again!

You are a busy mum with six boys. How do you maintain a work life balance?

Family. The support of my husband and family is unbelievable.  I also try not to work on weekends. My customers are also extremely supportive, as they understand I am a mum and need to juggle family life and running a business.

What inspires you?

I love fabrics, and the designs I source are not what you see everyday.

What are your tips for managing an online business?

Being organised and having good time management skills. I also don’t worry about competition, I like to think outside the square.

Where can we buy your earrings?

Currently, they are stocked at BDCU Alliance Bank Centres across the Highlands and you can always find them on the Cute as a Button Designs Facebook Page and Instagram.

What’s the best part of banking with a local bank?

Best thing would be the personal touch! It’s nice to walk into a bank and they know you by name! You are not just another customer!
