Social Media – things to think about

Attention: open in a new window. Print

Social media can be a great tool but like anything online there are some things you need to look out for.

Social Media has revolutionised the way we interact with friends and family. It’s expanded our social networks like never before. As Australians we are one of the most connected nations in the world through social media. Social media can be a great tool but like anything online there are some things you need to look out for.

Keeping your profile safe:

  • Make sure you have a strong password and change it regularly.
  • Manage your privacy settings carefully –think about what information you share and with who.
  • Consider how you use location settings and make sure you check you privacy settings
  • Don’t’ friend randoms even if they are connected via a ‘real ‘ friend. If you don’t know them, question why they want to friend before adding them to your friends.
  • Be careful who to trust – it’s pretty easy to set up a fake profile and things may not be quite what they seem – if you’ve ever seen the TV program Catfish you’ll know what we mean.
  • Think about what you share and post. Once it’s out there its not coming back!

Some things to think about or do:

  • If it’s too good to be true then it probably is – don’t respond to fake posts or comments on social media - they could be something else entirely and not good.
  • Don’t post stuff that you will regret later, not only could you get into a world of hurt but it could stick around for years and may even harm your career prospects. (If you are on a gap year in a country with laws different to Australia think carefully about what you post whilst visiting that country)
  • Never give personal details to someone via social media – you never know who might see it.
  • Posting about holidays sounds great but don’t forget if you haven’t managed who see’s your posts you are basically advertising to the world that you aren’t home.
  • Ignore trolls – they are not worth it and could be something else entirely.

Social media is a great way to have fun, connect with people and share what you love; basic rule is - think about it before you do something online.
